Painting our Kitchen Cabinets – Make it March with Beth Ann Doing

I have been working on a HUGE project and it’s time to show it OFF.  I painted our kitchen cabinets. Thanks to some great paint and time, everything worked out GREAT.   First, I did LOTS of research, how to, asked lots of questions and planned out my project.  Do the homework and decide then, IF you can do it. Second, make or take a block of time and doing a kitchen, you must plan ahead.

This is my AFTER Photo

How to Paint Kitchen Cabinet

The BEFORE Photo – See the vinyl on the top right cabinet. These are the original cabinets, all have a vinyl topping, neighbors had removed them and I knew I could do it too. The worse that could happen…we get new cabinet doors. DIDN’T HAPPEN !

How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets

This is how they looked on most of the edges, the glue had dried up. Number the inside of each cabinet. I didn’t remove hinges, but did remove the doors from the boxes

Here is were I am pretty sure I screamed ! !  With just a putty knife I went around the outside edge and it came off  ! ! ! IN A WHOLE PIECE ! Happy Dancing in my Kitchen   First one done and the row of three. I was THRILLED !

In little OVER an HOUR, I had all the vinyl removed ! ! !  I then removed the door hinges from the boxes and did a VERY lite sanding with a brown paper sack. Trick is here in an old post

How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets

I shared this photo and LOTS of talk about my clean cabinets inside. We have NO storage and if not organized, I can’t find anything and that driving me crazy !

Paint Kitchen Cabinets

NOW the fun part! !   I did a LOT of research about kitchen paint and paint in general. There in not reason to do this wrong, AND I have done that…2 houses ago. NOT a PAID ad, BUT I used Benjamin Moore ADVANCE Paint. I took a door to the store(vinyl removed) and talked with them and YES, it would work, the gallon was about 55.00. I had KILZ’s and did 2 coats of that, sanding with brown sack in between.

How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets

I set up a work station, a white poster board on counter, paint can, an old towel and then the cabinet, you can do a lazy susan thing then.  I ONLY taped the first one, I have a very steady hand. I did the top and edges, not the inside.

How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets

Placed can’s on the garage floor and added cabinets on top,  FLAT. 2 Coats of KILZ and 2 Coats of the Benjamin Moore Advance, brown sack sand between.   The trick to this paint is to paint and LEAVE it ALONE ! It is self leveling, see something get it the next coat ! That’s REALLY hard for me. BUT I learned quick, LEAVE it ALONE !  P.S. I brush all the cabinets, I don’t like a roller, just messy to me.  With the self leveling it worked FOR ME, perfect.

NOW THE HARD PART ! LET THEM DRY A DAY OR 2 BETWEEN COATS. I KNOW, YOU WANT THEM DONE, but DON’T

I did the final coat and we left for 3 days, again, LET them DRY !

Husband doesn’t have to get on a ladder and he put them up as quick as I could hand them to him.   They are a very light blue color, as the light and time of day changes, so do them, to a light gray. Didn’t plan that, but love it.

How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets

Added back on the simple silver knobs we had been using !  Just finished painting the inside of the back door to match !   I purchased paint for this project, had everything else. So for about 50-60 dollars I have a new kitchen.  Next color will be RED

Finished Building my Sewing Table

One last day of this table, but I love it. I have had a couple questions, the table is all two by fours and a 3/4 inch plywood top. Husband and I moved through the pile of both the two by fours (need to be straight) and plywood(perfect grain pattern)
They (workers) will look at you, watch and NEVER help. AND I am VERY fine with that. Better to leave me ALONE.  We always put everything back on the racks. The cost for both the plaid walls and table just about 300.
This table is 77 inches long, 36 inches wide and 32 inches high ! It’s a beast. I LOVE IT and My Sewing room is DONE???

Building my NEW Office Table

how to Building two by four table

plans for building a two by four tableFirst measure, re-measure and again measure your wall or your area, make a very detailed plan. This is the way I did mine, not a pro, not a carpenter, don’t over think it.  I just used two by fours, screws, white paint and time.
Off to get lumber, Husband checked my numbers so there are not a return trip. I didn’t purchase the top at this time. I wanted the base together and MAKE sure I had the right size cut.   I wanted this table heavy and not able to move around when my sewing machine was going. I did the legs this way.

With Husbands help added two by fours to the outside edges. After see the space under the table I added a shelf, which I love having.

Back to Lowes, for the table top. I like to do this talking with the gentlemen cutting the wood, which side will have the best edge after cutting? This guy was HARD to warm up, but I told him it was me building the table and I was asking out of no knowledge and it WORKED !

How to a building two by four table

This is the top and Husband did the cuts for the new under shelf. I did 2 thin coats of stain and LOTS of satin top coats, sanding with a brown bag in between loads, this took days. DO NOT hurry drying.

It’s All About the Plaid, How I Painted my Plaid Walls

New Look to my sewing room.

How to paint a plaid design on a wall

Our plan had been to live in the condo for a bit and then purchase a house, you know a house like we sold..I don’t think that is happening anytime soon. AND… I hate my sewing room, yes I said it, “HATE” my sewing room. This is the THIRD do of it, there was no committee meeting about it…since Husband retired, he cares about me decorating???

I painted the two walls the standard white of our condo about two weeks before doing the strips. And BEFORE you all go off the deep end, I’m a REALLY good painter and I don’t cover things, I am slow and steady. Kind of, I paint at my own risk. BUT, you may need to cover….How to paint a plaid THIS piece of paper is the most important of ALL.  Plan it out. I like to work a couple of hours a day. I NEVER paint when I am tired. Nothing goes right and I really like painting so for me it’s get up, breakfast and paint. In the pool by 1:00, always my end goal.

I used a level and one of my quilting rulers, ten inch one, very fine lines across the wall with a pencil and then added the blue tape just on the outside of the lines.

I added the Valspar Clear Glaze to the paint, it’s doesn’t change the paint color it just lets you work a bit longer with the paint, it doesn’t dry as fast. NOT a paid promo…

I finished painting the strips and removed the tape pretty quickly.

painting a plaid wall

I let it dry a couple of days and then added the up and down strip. Same as before, measure, mark, tape and paint.

Did just a bit of touch up and I LOVE it.

I designed and built a HUGE table, with Husband’s help, will share soon.

Re-doing My Laundry Room…aka…Closet

I’ve painted, cleaned and it’s DONE

(Updated POST, added the paint color and how I used this color in my kitchen) This is a post from The Quilt Ladies and has a life of its own. How I updated our laundry room.  It’s my number ONE pin on Pinterest and if you’d like to follow my Pinterest boards I’m HERE

Our little condo has a closet for the Laundry Room and I just didn’t like it, plus I couldn’t reach the shelf without being on my tip toes !

I moved everything out of our little kitchen dining area,
we don’t use it. Than went to Lowe’s

Want to see a grown man shiver in his work boots ?

Walk into Lowe’s with a yellow legal pad, tape measure and pictures from
pinterest ! ! ! Yes, it was a metal tape measure not cloth, I’ve learned, they will laugh out loud at you, I know I did it….once.

before and after of a laundry room closet My drying time was less with the cabinets in the air conditioning, in the garage and in Florida, it would have taken quite a bit longer for them to dry.

They wash great and no hairs come out like the other ones !
brown paper sack as sand paper Trick TWO is a BROWN paper sack, paper is the finest sand paper. BUT, it must be a BROWN sack. The only one I had in the house was from a little quilt shop in McKinney, TX, Stitched with Love, their site.  Cut the sack open and I like to fold it in and use just as sand paper, it makes the paint and wood soft !

I’m going to have to do it more often…it’s been 5 years for me. And, from the looks of it, too LONG !

My Dining Room Table and Chairs Re-done with Chalk Paint

I had an idea one day…..I did the research and was pretty sure it would be NO problem to do, “I can do that.”

Before and After Table with Chalk Paint

Well, no problem but OH MY, what a project. This is NOT a hurry up project and getting VERY sick during it, helped only with drying time, because I just didn’t care to ever walk into the garage again. That being said, and the table sitting in the dining room, I really like it and how it turned out. We’ve had the table for over 30 years, and it’s rock solid.

Husband and I pulled the table out, put it on to it’s side and then flat to remove the top. It’s just so heavy.

Before and After Table with Chalk PaintBefore and After Table with Chalk Paint

We moved the table into the garage, added the leafs and Husband put a couple of the screws back in to hold it, so the sanding could begin.

Before and After Table with Chalk Paint

This is the second time I’ve sanded the table and re-stained it, this table is loved and used. Do all your sanding FIRST and then clean up your work place. Before and After Table with Chalk Paint

Took the top off the table and I cleaned the garage up from all the sanding. With chalk paint all you have to do is a light sanding, I used a sanding block and just kind of scuffed the surface up.

Before and After of Dining Room Table with Chalk Paint

Before and After Table with Chalk PaintI did four coats of the Chalk Paint on everything, this is ONE coat on the chair legs

Before and After of Dining Room Table with Chalk Paint

I did not want an antique took, I wanted a old time white paint look. I did chalk white and the Sealing Wax just as it said on the can. The Sealing Wax is….different….less is better and more coats even better.

DO NOT HURRY the WAX, it must dry between coats. I did 3 coats of wax.

Before and After of Dining Room Table with Chalk Paint

We sat the table top back on and started staining. I did light coats and many to get the color I wanted, I didn’t want it to be as dark as before.

Before and After Table with Chalk Paint

This is 4 coats of stain and I did 4 coats of poly.  Let it DRY between each one, this project with drying time took me just over 3 weeks. DO NOT HURRY this project.

Before and After of Dining Room Table with Chalk Paint

I am SO….PROUD of this table. It turned out GREAT.
