Today, is the quarter square triangles, those clever little pieces that add movement quilt blocks. Sometimes called hourglass units, these triangles are made by combining two half square triangles and then slicing again. They’re perfect for stars, pinwheels, and any design that needs a touch of symmetry and flair.
I am taking the mystery away and showing you how to do it easily.
We have made a square, a triangle and some basic quilt info. NOW it’s time for some FUN quilt block patterns. Don’t over think these, just step by step.
Quarter Square Triangle
Cut 2 squares, 1 each color – your squares needs to be cut 1 ¼” larger than the finished size you need, example you need a 4” finished square cut square
5 ¼” x 5 ¼”
On lightest color on the back, pencil mark from corner to corner.
Sew ¼” from the line, on each side of the line.
With scissors cut on each of the 2 lines, open up, move the match colors, pin and sew you will have 2 blocks
This month’s quilt block pattern is about moving the outside quilt blocks around the center. Color placement is fun and don’t over think it, have fun with it. Finished quilt block is 12″ x 12″ and you can get all 2023 Quilt Blocks here on my site
Center Block
Cut 18 Assorted Colors – 1 ½ x 2 ½” Piece as shown for the center
Cut 2 Blue – 1 ½” x 8 ½” Sew to the left and right side
Cut 2 Blue – 1 ½” x 6 ½” Sew to the top and bottom Sew as shown
Cut 32 Assorted Colors – 1 ½” x 2 ½” Sew 2 together long side, to form 16 blocks,
Cut 4 White – 2 ½” x 2 ½”
Sew as shown – top and bottom Sew as shown – left and right

About ME ! My name is Beth Ann, I am sixty- one years young and living in central Florida, about 20 minutes for the white sandy beaches we all love and right on a golf course, that I have never played on, but it’s pretty. I was born and raised in Iowa and have lived in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and now in Florida, which I still can’t believe.
I have Husband, two boys, two daughter-n-laws and four Grands, whom all live an airplane ride away. We travel to them, a couple of times a year and I’ve made myself learn and USE text. I was home with the boys for years, working part-time at a library, the home office of a jewelry chain and then at banks, Husband’s career took up to 10 different retail stores and there was always a bank.
We live in a condo with all the things you think you will have when you move to Florida. I always explain to people moving to Florida is like going to college, no one is from here, and everyone has a story and just because people are retired doesn’t change their personalities to the good or bad. Over twenty years ago, I self-published by books, The Quilt Ladies Collection, each book on its own and sold at quilt shows. I added titles and quilts as I went. So, here I am, living in Florida, (I say again!) which I still can’t believe. Taking care of my Mom, Husband’s parents are here too and doing what I like and need to do daily.
