My MOST Asked for How To !

Quilt Binding and Hand Stitching it Down

I’m sharing the way “I” do quilt binding. Like everything in quilting there are MANY ways. This is the way “I” do it ! !

I have tried and used other methods, but I always come back to this way. IF you ever think, “Should I pin this?” “PIN IT!” I am a firm believer that a moment to pin is better than a moment of seam ripping !
This post is huge with LOTS of pictures.

Cut your strip 2 ½” inches wide and long enough to go
all the around your quilt PLUS 6-8 Inches
More is ALWAYS better with this in my mind.

Cut enough strips to go around the outside edge of your
quilt.
Sew all strips together with a 45-degree angle.

Sew and Trim to ¼ inch seam allowance

Open and Press and trim any ends.
Do this to make all binding needed.

BUT ALWAYS check YOUR BOBBIN THREAD, make sure you have enough to make it all the way around the quilt. NOTHING worse than to stop and fill or change a bobbin!

This is where “I” do it a bit different, I just can’t get the seam right using the fold the corner way, I do a straight seam here as shown.

Start sewing about 5-6 inches from your binding end,

Sew the binding with a ¼ inch seam allowance.

I mark with a pin on each corner

the edge. Back stitch a few stitches.

Fold binding back down on to the Quilt. Match up edges.
A diagonal fold will form between the
layers and a straight fold on top. Do corners one at a time, but

Not all Quilts are for Sale

I get an email or comment about my quilts pretty much weekly, thank you, but my quilts are not for sale.

Most of my older quilts are from Estate Sales and Auctions from our time in the Midwest. I use all my quilts, old and new and most still go in the washing and dryer, as we live in an association and I can’t have a drying line….It would come down after using…wouldn’t use on Tuesday (mowing day)….can’t change it….OLD people.

This is one of my quilts which I purchased around 1985ish? in Burlington, IA. I was new to quilting and I headed to an auction with two little boys, can you see that being a mistake! On the whole they did pretty good, but the waiting. This is one of three quilts I purchased that day. You couldn’t see the quilt, it’s was folded, folded and folded, then hand stitched around the outside edge, but I could see the quilting. $24 for three quilts. I took me days to get the stitching out. Someone didn’t want them to see the light of day. The quilts are not perfect, BUT very close. I use and love them. And they are NOT FOR SALE.  But, I do have quilt patterns, not this one, it’s nine-patch with solid white off blocks The Quilt Ladies Quilt Pattern Shop
