I have been working with 2 1/2 inch fabric squares and I can’t seem to get my colors right. So, out comes my color wheel. Quilt fabric colors are just like paint colors and I am going to try and explain a bit.
I have used this method too HERE (color from a photo) and HERE the tried and true, move fabrics around ! The color wheel is how to get you started, BUT as with everything it’s just a start, YOU do YOU. NO RULES
The color wheel is simply a circle tool that shows the relationships of colors. Below is a six color, color wheel with the primary colors being RED,YELLOW and BLUE.Primary colors are the three colors that cannot be created by mixing other colors together: red, blue, and yellow.
Secondary colors are created by mixing two primary colors together: Mix Red and Green you get Yellow Mix Red and Blue you get Magenta (light purple) Mix Blue and Green you get Cyan (light blue)
The color wheel also organizes the colors based on their relationships with one another. Colors that are directly across from each other on the color wheel are called complementary colors. These colors create a strong contrast when placed next to each other. For example, red and green are complementary colors.
Remember with fabric you have textures and patterns that will add interest to your quilt. And most importantly, HAVE FUN WITH COLOR ! ! !

This may seem a bit strange, but I love the colors in this dress, it’s from a Vogue magazine probably 6-8 years ago, (LOVE IT) and it’s how I picked the colors for my quilt Pattern Book.
I do have to say that after all these many years, I don’t over think color anymore. I have used some real dog of fabrics and when it’s all together…the quilt seems to work on it’s own.
It’s SPRING and here is my Table Topper Pattern for you ! It’s finishes size is 22″ x 22″
I used a charm pack and cut the fabrics to the sizes needed, didn’t want to overthink colors.
I’m using a charm package, but any fabric will work.
Cut 25 – 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″
Cut 20 – 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″
Sew into rows with 5 squares across
Cut 16 – 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″
Sew together to form the cross border
Sew all the rows together, forming the center.
Cut 2 – 14 1/2″ x 4 1/2′ Sew to the top and bottom
Cut 2 – 22 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ Sew to the sides
Layer quilt together, machine quilt or hand quilt. Cut Binding 77 ” x 2 1/2″ to finish quilt off

This is a simple quilt pattern made with squares, using just three colors, and doing it red, white and blue, the colors pop.
It’s not the red and blue, it’s the white that will make any colors POP. You can use any two colors and white, result will be wonderful.
This quilt’s story started when we lived in Nebraska. Husband had a grocery store and always worked every holiday. After the boys left, I seemed to have very long holidays. This is one of the July 4th weeks.
Holiday parties and get togethers are not that much fun when you arrive hours late when Husband is available and others are about partied out. I have helped way to many hostesses clean up. After a few of those, I decided, home and make a quilt.
