Making May Quilt Block Patterns

Simple three by three inch quilt pattern book

I like changing things and doing the different, today is a three by three inch quilt pattern for you, complete quilt pattern is here for you.

When sewing the pieces in a smaller quilt pieces, as this quilt pattern is. I do everything just as IF it was a regular size quilt block. I cut with a rotary cutter, sew on my sewing machine, and press. The ONLY thing different is I trim my 1/4 inch seam allowance for just about 1/8 of an inch and press. REMEMBER, to press with a hot iron, UP and DOWN, you do not want to stretch the cotton.

My First Complete Quilt – Old but Pretty Good

I started quilting years and years ago, 30+ years. This is my first quilt, I had started with pillow tops. I took a class in Burlington, Iowa. Which was taught by Liz Porter, at the time she was working for Better Homes and Garden, was speaking on the weekends. This was a bring 2 1/2″ squares, share with all, and do color gradation. a one day class.  See my quilt patterns

My first quilt

We all start someplace, I didn’t know how to do corners or how to do a double binding. We are all new once. I love this quilt, it’s home to me, it’s been packed, moved, taken, machine washed and dried for years. I will not mend or fix anything on it. It’s like me, old but still pretty good.

My first quilt My first quilt

BUT, what I did know how to do was hand quilt. All those pillows I made.  Hearts in each square and straight line on the outside edges.

My first quilt

I see and hear it all the time about being perfect with your quilt making. Stop it !  DON’T be perfect, DO ! !  Do it wrong, do it right, but DO it.

Quilt Pattern Changed to New Quilt Pattern for Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day to all, Mother’s, Sisters and Girl Friends. We can only do this all together and with each heart we step as one. Today, I am continuing to change up traditional quilt patterns. The quilt pattern block has a finished size of eight inches by eight inches.  The Complete quilt pattern book is at My pattern shop

The first quilt pattern is a traditional quilt block, the second is MINE, all dressed up.

There are a lot of way to make half-square triangles, I like the add 7/8″ method, as I find I can piece them to the right size pretty much all the time. Here is my how to for triangles

My Drop Leaf TABLE for my Office

I’m on the third go of doing my office/art room over and I think this time, I got it ! ! From the painted walls, my wonderful studio table and NOW my drop leaf table ! !   Of course lots of drawings and lots of research….I love project research !  Finished table is here and I love it.

building a drop leaf table

With all the research done and three different options, I talk with Husband, it’s become an almost presentation. You know…..he’s the builder and THANK goodness he doesn’t roll his eyes at me anymore ! !

That being said, doesn’t mean he’s not going to change things a bit. First idea was just to purchase a 1950″s drop leaf, cut, fix to wall, he wanted nothing of that. I had though 2″ x 2″ legs and he wanted it to match my studio table, easy give. I wanted shelves, to get EVERYTHING off the floor in this room. Well…just about everything. My plans

The leaf legs out of 1 x 4

All put together and ready for paint

With drying time being an issue here in Florida, I moved the table into the house for painting.

Assembly was in it’s place, it’s very heavy

Added legs on first, hinges on top and bottom of each. A piano hinge was used for the drop leaf and fitted over the legs and was fasten down from underneath.

Letting it cure for a bit and I will show it all soon.  First question…..YES, you can do both sides. I didn’t want that, I just want to put I sewing machine on the top and pull it out when I need it.   NEXT, I would like a fireplace in the living room….the planning has already began.

Finding Myself as my Focus

I am trying to get my mind around a NEW normal. I have had to step way back and stop doing what is SO much a part of my DNA that it’s Mirror oh Mirrotaken me into a circle of….understanding, screaming, crying, walking away, hurt, my ever-present giving up and just not caring anymore.   It all started with my Mom falling and breaking her femur last August. Hospital, surgery, rehab, now long-term skilled care, which will be for the rest of her life.  There are lots of stories from the process and not much happiness left…in me about her. A dear friend said about two months ago, “YOU have to care about and for yourself, you are lost.” I FINALLY heard her and since I’m trying to focus on  me.

And NO, I still see my Mom (once a week  or so), try to talk with her daily, if she will pick up the phone ( I try two times only) or she calls me??? But, I get a turn at my life now.  PLEASE “Don’t share how wonderful all your care giving of others was or is. I have heard it all. I understand, I CANNOT DO IT. Or do I want too. I have said that since the beginning, with my Dad, with Mom and to my Husband. This is not news to anyone!” What I do think is knew to all, is that I meant it.

I have to think everything through, then again and again (couple of days). Pen to paper and I had a plan, have to have a plan…I always do. Reading this back…I make this sound easy, this has NOT been easy, I’m on a journey and I will be on for along time and I’m sure I will have to check myself often.

  • I scheduled an appointment with my Doctor, all good.
  • Looking around the house and found the things I have missed doing. I started a canvas months ago, the base was on it and nothing else. I pulled out my acrylic and started. Our home needed De-cluttering (VERY slowly, still working on it)  needed to eat better, it all started, pretty much at ONCE. Painted our living room and dining room too…WHITE??? Have no clue, but WHITE ????
  • We had a huge trip coming up for our 40th anniversary and it was a great time to stop with my iPhone, that was probably the easiest. Check it one time daily and leave it alone. Also, with my little camera in hand, the trip let me take pictures, I had stopped something I love doing. I took 2448 pictures in three days at the Biltmore Estate.

    The Biltmore in Asheville NC
Side view of The Biltmore Estate
  • Also, on the trip it gave me a chance to forget, forget everything that had happened, things that were said and made a plan of how to handle her (Mom’s) process, I will have to handle this for the rest of her life.  I still have times, I can’t let things go, I just keep trying and trying.
  • Sleep, WONDERFUL Sleep. I love my bed, always have and always will, nothing makes me happier than a wonderful bed. I had changed sheets, but I hadn’t been doing it MY way. Well, not anymore, clean sheet every couple of days, quilts changed all the time. NEW pillows and even a new sound machine, the result, no sleeping med’s ! Win !
  • I don’t say sorry very often anymore, I don’t need to, I can’t make any one happy but myself.   Or what I like to call, “NO, Tap dancing to make everyone happy.” No more !
  • I am working on my VERY short fuse…..and with that silence. BUT, Why should I have to be silent?

This process is ON going and I can say, I feel better, I understand better and I know I can be the only one to make me happy.

Boundaries book for self helpI highly recommend  Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend, I already OWN it, have for YEARS,  and at this time in MY life I read it again …..I know I can’t do this again to myself.

As always…. The story will continue…It always does….

How to Mend an Old Quilt – Beth Ann Doing

I receive an email like this about three times a month. LONG ago, when home with kids this is what I did. I repaired old quilt, PLEASE, remember this is NOT a quick project, but so worth your time, how to mend an old quilt.

The Question: “I am trying to repair a quilt my mother made me for my wedding 48 years ago the bindings were torn by so much use as well as some of her beautiful star patches, I have separated the binding am not sure how to replace some triangle patches of her lone star quilt can you advise me I am a beginner have been watching a lot of videos decided I would start with this beautiful quilt that needs some fixing so I can hand it down to my daughter she adored her grandmother”

How to Repair an OLD Quilt  I ALWAYS wash quilts before I mend, this one turned out
VERY nice, they usually do ! I am doing 100% cotton quilt, usually from  1940-50’s THEY ARE NOT MUSEUM QUALITY QUILTS, THEY ARE LOVED AND USED QUILTS. PLEASE USE COMMON SENSE AND DO NOT EMAIL YOUR NASTY COMMENTS ABOUT OLD QUILTS AND WASHING. I HAVE HEARD IT ALL.  That being said, really who wants to work on, use, repair or sleep under a dirty quilt??? These are LOVE quilts.

Three blocks in this quilt needed attention,
