Grading Quilts – What to sleep under the what NOT !

I had a questions, “What is a use it Quilt?” I’ve never talked about this before. I kind of grade my quilts, this yellow quilt was a gift, and this is the back of it! I made it to sleep under, use it, love it, wash and dry it.

bright yellow quilt for queen size bedThis is one of my use it quilts, it’s from an auction about 30 years ago, it’s still lovely.  It’s  all the hand quilting, the batting has held up very well. Right now it’s folded on a chair in our living room and I use it all the time.

These are the next step up, used hand quilted items around my house. I love table topper and have them all around. Most are machine pieced and I have hand quilted them.  But they are not washed daily and they are very much in original quality.

Sleeping Under a Quilt of Hankies

This is the quilt our Grand’s were sleeping under the other day in my post. It’s made using old hankies that I backed with muslin, I always do this, they seem to need the extra support. Then just simple strips and squares in the corners and I tied it. This quilt is from our time in Nebraska and it has double batting in it and it’s a use it quilt.

Sleeping under Quilts at Grandma’s

They are NOT this size any MORE, they are young men now and this was one of their favorite things to do, watch TV in Grandma and Grandpa’s bed, and sleeping under Grandma’s quilts.

Of course they had to pick a quilt, a show to watch, they would arrange pillows to have the perfect angle to watch and it’s strange it was always about nap time when this all happened ?? Grandparents rule !

grand kids and quilt

The quilt they are sleeping under is the first hankie quilt I ever made, it’s very simple, hankies lined with muslin, straight sashing and borders, and I tied it. I still have and use this quilt, last time it was washing I had to do a lot of repair, the hankies not wearing very well and it’s getting old too !

What’s in a Picture Quilt File ??

Cleaning and organizing quilt files the past few months, I want to show some of the quilts around my house or houses from the past.  This is a quilt drying on our deck in Nebraska. It’s a king size quilt, and too heavy for my clothes line, it has double batting and I tied it.

This was the guest room, I did the windows in stain glass and Husband lite them from behind, the door was a garage sale find, notice the down comforter under the pillows, had on a EVERY bed….just needed the warmth. The Quilt pattern is just triangle centers, solid blocks around that and four patch corners.

Found it and it’s back in the Tub

I was looking for something in my quilt tubs and found this quilt.   It’s a little red, log cabin quilt, the log cabin blocks are made using cut strips of one inch. Using a 5 inch package of charm fabrics.   I used to do trunk shows and quilts like this were a part of that show, I have a lot of quilts.

How to Tie a Quilt by The Quilt Ladies

How to Tie a Quilt with Yarn

This quilt post just keeps going and going. I’m re-posting it as I think to tie a quilt is a quick way to finish a quilt which is to be loved and used.

As with everything I’m sure there are a few ways of doing a tied quilt, this is the way “I” do it.

Please like, pin and share, or stop over at The Quilt Ladies Quilt Pattern Shop

How to tie a quilt using yarn I use these needles, sometimes a larger one and sometimes not. After doing them I really think it’s how I feel that day !
How to tie a quilt using yarnI like to use, “Peaches and Cream” yarn, soft but NOT TOO soft, it has to be to hold the knot.

How to tie a quilt using yarn

I like my cutting mat UNDER the quilt, so I don’t push through and chip my table top.

How to tie a quilt using yarn

Cut yarn about 30 inches long one thickness.

From the side you will see the knot, go down and up, going though, top, batting and backing.

How to tie a quilt using yarn

Pull needle through, leave about a 2 inch tail form the first knot.

How to tie a quilt using yarn Come back through again,
How to tie a quilt using yarn DO NOT cut yarn, travel to next knot and repeat.

How to tie a quilt using yarn

How to tie a quilt using yarn I do all the knots and then cut them all at the same time.

How to tie a quilt using yarnAs I tie each one, I lay the yarn going down.

Cut ends to about 1/2″ to 3/4″ is way YOU like

My First Complete Quilt – Old but Pretty Good

I started quilting years and years ago, 30+ years. This is my first quilt, I had started with pillow tops. I took a class in Burlington, Iowa. Which was taught by Liz Porter, at the time she was working for Better Homes and Garden, was speaking on the weekends. This was a bring 2 1/2″ squares, share with all, and do color gradation. a one day class.  See my quilt patterns

My first quilt

We all start someplace, I didn’t know how to do corners or how to do a double binding. We are all new once. I love this quilt, it’s home to me, it’s been packed, moved, taken, machine washed and dried for years. I will not mend or fix anything on it. It’s like me, old but still pretty good.

My first quilt My first quilt

BUT, what I did know how to do was hand quilt. All those pillows I made.  Hearts in each square and straight line on the outside edges.

My first quilt

I see and hear it all the time about being perfect with your quilt making. Stop it !  DON’T be perfect, DO ! !  Do it wrong, do it right, but DO it.
