Grandma’s Pearls and Mom’s Quilt

A Quilt and Pearls

We all have one or two items that become a beautiful heirloom from a loved.  It’s something we’ve received as a gift or has been handed down.

Great Great Grandma's Quilt

This quilt is my empowerment. This quilt started me on a ride that I’ve been on for over 40 years, quilting. So today, I’m share my FAVORITE quilt !
My Great-Great Grandmother’s Quilt This quilt was a gift to my mother from her Great Grandmother. And then a Gift to me from My Mother.
Making it my, GREAT-GREAT Grandmother’s Gift to ME !
Well…That’s how I like to look at it. I never met her and my mom only remembers helping with the peddle sewing machine. I use this quilt and love sleeping under it. It goes in the washer and now living here in Florida and not having a clothes line it does go it the dryer….Yes… it bothers me too, but…. the colors are still very bright.

quilt and pearls from The Quilt Ladies Books
These carry more than just aesthetic value, they carry a story, a memory, and a treasure that is truly priceless. For me, it’s my grandma’s pearls. I wear them on special occasions to this day. This is her (Grandma Glade) on the left in the picture, with my Mom and  is on the cover of my, The Quilt Ladies Book.

The Quilt Ladies in Print

My grandma was a fashionable lady, from furs or jewerly. She loved to accessorize her outfits and her favorite was a strand of pearls. Pretty sure they were a gift to herself, but I have not way to knowing that.   Remember to cherish the things that really matter.

All Quilter’s Have a First Quilt

First Quilt Made – The Quilt Ladies

This is My first quilt
In the early 1980’s we moved to Burlington, Iowa, it’s in the southeastern corner of the state on the Mississippi River and yes, I learned how to spell Mississippi. The Quilt Ladies Quilt Pattern Shop

I had done some quilt blocks, some pillows and then I saw in the paper a class being hosted by the local quilt group. I remember it being expensive and how I agonized over it for days. but, finally signed up.
The teacher was “Liz Porter” at the time she worked for one of the magazines, Better Homes maybe, but is was a wonderful day and I learned so much.

My First Quilt
My First Quilt is all Squares
My First Quilt
It was a color class which meant nothing to me at the time, looking at the quilt today I didn’t get the whole idea. Liz brought letters to add to each quilt to identify, I used my initials.
First Quilt is all Squares
Hand quilting was so relaxing to me, I had no frame, just a dining room table, pinned it very well and quilted. I checked out library books on how to do everything. The quality of books we have now is crazy different from then.
My First Quil
I was approached to join the quilt group after the class. I think I was a rarity in the group a “new” member. I remember being laughed at when they saw my round corners (months later) on the quilt. I love these corners. This is my quilt, I curl up under it daily, it’s washed all the time and it’s just over 43 years old. It’s never looked better to me.

And, if you are in the group in Burlington, IA. I’d love to hear from you ! !

Red, White and Blue Quilt Stars

Little Stat Quilt

This is one of my little quilt, each quilt star measures, two inches by two inches. Not paper pieced, machine pieced, (I go slow) clip, and press as I do, hand quilted.

Little Quilt in Red, White and Blue, machine pieced and hand quiltedThis is an 18″ x 18″ quilt using traditional Red, White and Blue.

Little Quilt in Red, White and Blue, machine pieced and hand quilted
It’s machine pieced and hand quilted. I use only 100% cotton.
The Quilt back. The stitches are very small and add a texture to the quilt.
Little Quilt in Red, White and Blue, machine pieced and hand quilted I do 8 to10 photo’s of things that are set ups. A stand, quilt, milk glass, flowers. Moving it to the dining table. Sitting in a red bowl. And again I took 6-8 pictures.

Show me a Quilt – See it Saturday

Quilted Table Topper

When I was teaching, this is my beginner’s quilt 5 week class, the class would have used 2 1/2″ squares, I cut mine down for a table topper size,  1 1/2  inch squares.  Machine pieced and hand quilted. Table Topper Quilt, by The Quilt LadiesHERE is my binding tutorial for you

On a regular size quilt, I would cut my binding strips 2 1/2″ wide, but on this little one, I cut them 1 1/4″ wide.
I like, little quilts to have little binding.
Table Topper Quilt, by The Quilt LadiesAll the sewing is the same, 1/4″ seam allowance.
Tutorial on how to add quilt binding to a quilt. But, I like to trim the backing and batting about in half.
Quilt binding tutorialThis is before the binding is turned and sewn down. You can turn it under and see what you like before trimming around the entire quilt.  I like to hand sew the binding down, I can get the corners, better and yes, you will have to mess with them a bit to get them perfect, they are VERY tiny.

Grading Quilts – What to sleep under the what NOT !

I had a questions, “What is a use it Quilt?” I’ve never talked about this before. I kind of grade my quilts, this yellow quilt was a gift, and this is the back of it! I made it to sleep under, use it, love it, wash and dry it.

bright yellow quilt for queen size bedThis is one of my use it quilts, it’s from an auction about 30 years ago, it’s still lovely.  It’s  all the hand quilting, the batting has held up very well. Right now it’s folded on a chair in our living room and I use it all the time.

blue and white quilt

These are the next step up, used hand quilted items around my house. I love table topper and have them all around. Most are machine pieced and I have hand quilted them.  But they are not washed daily and they are very much in original quality.

Sleeping under Quilts at Grandma’s

They are NOT this size any MORE, they are young men now and this was one of their favorite things to do, watch TV in Grandma and Grandpa’s bed, and sleeping under Grandma’s quilts.

Of course they had to pick a quilt, a show to watch, they would arrange pillows to have the perfect angle to watch and it’s strange it was always about nap time when this all happened ?? Grandparents rule !

grand kids and quilt

The quilt they are sleeping under is the first hankie quilt I ever made, it’s very simple, hankies lined with muslin, straight sashing and borders, and I tied it. I still have and use this quilt, last time it was washing I had to do a lot of repair, the hankies not wearing very well and it’s getting old too !
