All Quilter’s Have a First Quilt

First Quilt Made – The Quilt Ladies

This is My first quilt
In the early 1980’s we moved to Burlington, Iowa, it’s in the southeastern corner of the state on the Mississippi River and yes, I learned how to spell Mississippi. The Quilt Ladies Quilt Pattern Shop

I had done some quilt blocks, some pillows and then I saw in the paper a class being hosted by the local quilt group. I remember it being expensive and how I agonized over it for days. but, finally signed up.
The teacher was “Liz Porter” at the time she worked for one of the magazines, Better Homes maybe, but is was a wonderful day and I learned so much.

Tutorial How I do my Squares

My First Quilt
My First Quilt is all Squares
My First Quilt
It was a color class which meant nothing to me at the time, looking at the quilt today I didn’t get the whole idea. Liz brought letters to add to each quilt to identify, I used my initials.
First Quilt is all Squares
Hand quilting was so relaxing to me, I had no frame, just a dining room table, pinned it very well and quilted. I checked out library books on how to do everything. The quality of books we have now is crazy different from then.
My First Quil
I was approached to join the quilt group after the class. I think I was a rarity in the group a “new” member. I remember being laughed at when they saw my round corners (months later) on the quilt. I love these corners. This is my quilt, I curl up under it daily, it’s washed all the time and it’s just over 43 years old. It’s never looked better to me.

And, if you are in the group in Burlington, IA. I’d love to hear from you ! !

How “I” Mend an OLD Quilt – BethAnnDoing.com

From The Quilt Ladies

Re-post from 2018 and I still receive this email, I link them to this post. Please, remember these are NOT museum quality quilts, these are love quilts, that are washing, used and loved.

I receive an email like this monthly. LONG ago, when home with kids this is what I did. I repaired old quilt, PLEASE, remember this is NOT a quick project, but so worth your time, how to mend an old quilt.   She mentions in her email, that she removed pieces, I don’t do that. I make new pieces and applique to the top and or the quilt back, if you need binding, I do not remove the old, I sew new over it with fabric as close to the original as I can find. I like the idea of the old still being with the quilt….just me !

The Question: “I am trying to repair a quilt my mother made me for my wedding 48 years ago the bindings were torn from so much use as well as some of her beautiful star patches, I have separated the binding am not sure how to replace some triangle patches of her lone star quilt can you advise me I am a beginner have been watching a lot of videos decided I would start with this beautiful quilt that needs some fixing so I can hand it down to my daughter she adored her grandmother”

How to Repair an OLD Quilt
I ALWAYS wash quilts before I mend, this one turned out
VERY nice, they usually do ! I am doing a 100% cotton quilt, usually from  1940-50’s THEY ARE NOT MUSEUM QUALITY QUILTS, THEY ARE LOVED AND USED QUILTS. PLEASE USE COMMON SENSE AND DO NOT EMAIL YOUR NASTY COMMENTS ABOUT OLD QUILTS AND WASHING. I HAVE HEARD IT ALL.  That being said, really who wants to work on, use, repair or sleep under a dirty quilt??? These are LOVE quilts.

Three blocks in this quilt needed attention,

New Quilt Book on ETSY

Need to know to start New Quilt Block Pattern

Hello, I took a bit of time off and I have gotten back on my feet, slept for days, quilted and just let myself be ! That’s pretty hard for me, but slow and steady is how I have to do things, and it has to be OK.  In Florida we get just a few degrees in temperature change for fall, but I have purchased new pencils, Bic pens, have been able to sit out on our lanai and now not swimming in bath water temperature water at the pool. Fall is in the air Florida style.

I want to share the how I do quarter square blocks here, There are many ways to do these, this is the way “I” do them.

Triangles

Make a quilt triangle

Sew Good to good fabric, with a pencil draw a line corner to corner, this is
The line you measure your ¼” seam allowance from
Sew from edge to edge use a ¼” seam
Cut in half on the pencil line, trim threads
Open and press to the dark fabric,
There will be 2 blocks

how to make a triangle in quilting

Quarter Square Triangle
Cut 2 squares, 1 each color – your squares need to be cut 1 ¼” larger than the finished size you need, example you need a 4” finished square cut square 5 ¼” x 5 ¼”
On lightest color on the back, pencil mark from corner to corner.

Sew ¼” from the line, on each side of the line.
With scissors cut on each of the center line, open up, now move the match colors,  draw a line corner to corner, pin and sew as before, you will have 2 blocks.
