Fun Log Cabin Quilt Block Pattern

This is the first quilt I made for myself after we moved to Florida full time. (sometimes I just can’t get warm) 
 
Log Cabin Plaid Quilt PatternIt’s a fun and happy quilt. 
It is machine pieced and I hand quilted with large stitches. 
It’s been washed hundreds of time and is soooo…. soft.
 
Simple blocks and fun fabric.
 
Log Cabin Plaid Quilt Pattern FreeFinished block is 6′ x 6″
 
Cut on center – 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″
Cut 2 green plaids for sides – 2 1/2″ x 1 1/2″
Sew to sides
 
Cut 2 green plaids – 4 1/2″ x 1 1/2″
Sew to the top and bottom
 
Cut 2 blue plaids, 4 1/2″ x 1 1/2″
Sew to the sides
 
Cut 2 blue plaids – 6 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ 
Sew to the top and bottom
I made the log cabin blocks, added two inch borders, quilted and binding added, NO over thinking on this one !

Nothing says quilting like a Log Cabin quilt block. There is many ways to piece a log cabin, I added all the strip piece cutting measurement, but I like to cut strips and sew.

Cut 2 Blue – 1 ½”x 1 ½”
Cut 2 Green – 1 ½”x 1 ½”
Make the center 4-patch
 
Cut 1 Pink – 2 ½”x 1 ½” Sew to the top
Cut 1 Pink- 3 ½” x 1 ½” Sew to the right side
Cut 1 Blue – 3 ½” x 1 ½” Sew to the bottom
Cut 1 Blue – 4 ½” x 1 ½” Sew to the left side
 
Cut 1 Pink – 4 ½”x 1 ½” Sew to the top
Cut 1 Pink – 5 ½”x 1 ½” Sew to the right side
Cut 1 Blue – 5 ½”x 1 ½” Sew to the bottom

A Log Cabin quilt pattern for you today. The fun part of this quilt block is the center, it’s done just a bit different. It starts with 3 fabric strips.  Finished quilt block will measure ten inches by ten inches.

Cut t 2 Dk. Blue – 2 ½” x 1 ½”

Cut 2 Blue – 2 ½” x 1 ½”

Sew to make center

 

Cut 2 Blue – 4 ½” x 1 ½”

Sew on the right and left side

 

Cut 2 Red – 4 ½” x 1 ½”

Sew on to the top and bottom

 

Cut 2

 Gray –  6 ½” x 1 ½”

Sew on the right and left side

 

Cut 2 Green – 6 ½” x 1 ½”

Sew on to the top and bottom

Here is one of my log cabin quilt patterns,  the quilt block will have a finished size of ten inches by ten inches. This is one of the quilt block you can have a ball with mixing and moving colors around or use up some straps.

Make center 4 -patch

April in Review, Quilt Patterns and Books

It’s been a crazy April and I think with all the follow ups and questions, I made you think too.  I am learned, beginning to understand and trying very hard to not leave myself behind. My article started a conversation, which I am still not sure of but it’s started.  Also, books and quilt patterns, my favorites.

This is one of my use it up log cabin quilt blocks, it’s ten inches by ten inches and I love that it’s both 1 1/2″ strips and 2 1/2″ strips.  The quilt block is square but I don’t know how I took this picture??? Sew to form center

Today is a mix of fabric strips both 1 1/2 inch and 2 1/2 inch. The finished size of the quilt block is ten inches by ten inches.

Cut 1 Pink – 2 ½” x 2 ½”

Cut 2 Blue – 2 ½” x 1 ½”

Sew to make center

Cut 1 Green – 5 ½” x 1 ½”

Sew to center sides.

Cut 2 Yellow – 2 ½” x 4 ½”

Sew to the top

Cut 2 Gold – 2 ½” x  8 ½”

Sew to the right and left side

 

Cut 2 Yellow – 8 ½” x 1 ½”

Sew to the top and bottom

Changing it up a bit, by using cut strips of 2 1/2″ inches. This log cabin quilt block go’s together very quick and it’s a great way to use up all the strips you have around.

This is how the log cabin quilt block started, straight piecing and colors, dark on one side and light of other. Well…in my world these are light and dark colors.  IF you are new to quilting log cabin is the best, straight piecing and very quick results.   Doing a log cabin I like to just strips and just go, but all cutting is here for you.
