Loving quilt blocks and making them is not going together right now, me and my sewing machine are having…moments. So, I am walking away for a bit from THAT machine…but I have hundreds of quilt blocks drawn up and for the next few, I will be building from a simple quilt block pattern, and with changing placement and color, see how that simple quilt block is transformed. Star Around a Quilt Block Pattern – Part 2

Part TWO, Let’s Make a Quilt Block

Few days ago I started a quilt block, which I named, Star Around a Quilt Block Pattern, it probably has hundreds of names, but this is the one for me. Here is all cutting and Part ONE

From Part ONE to sew 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″
white to top and bottom of the star quilt block center.

Take 2 – 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ white, add triangles to the sides
Sew as shown to each side How to make Triangles

Sew 2 Rows – Top and bottom
2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ white, 1 triangle, 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″,
1 triangle, 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ white
Sew as shown, add to the top and bottom

Sew 2 Rows – Sides
1 – 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ color, 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ white, 1 triangle, 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″,
1 triangle, 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ white, 1 – 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ color
Sew as shown, sew to each side

Cut 6 Blue 2 7/8” x 2 7/8”
Cut 4 White 2 7/8” x 2 7/8”
Cut 2 Red 2 7/8” x 2 7/8”
Make Triangles – Triangle How To

Cut 1 Green 1 7/8” x 1 7/8”
Cut from corner to corner

Cut 1 White 2 7/8” x 2 7/8”

How to Add Triangles in Center Quilt Block

Cut your Squares into triangles as stated in the pattern.
Sew triangles to square, trim and press.
Cut your Squares and then into triangles as stated in the pattern.
Place the good-side of fabric to good-side of fabric, sew from corner to corner.
Using a 1/4” seam allowance, trim, press to larger triangle.

This quilt block has a finished size of eight inches by eight inches. Here is how I do triangle piecing and it’s also the way I will be present the quilt block cutting instructions, you have another way…you do you!

Cut 1 White 4 1/2” x 4 1/2”

Cut 4 White 2 1/2” x 2 1/2”

Cut 4 Red 2 7/8” x 2 7/8”

You have to love this quilt block name, Shoofly and I’m sharing a 3 inch by 3 inch finished quilt block today. (Triangles) I choose a bit darker fabric for the four squares around the center, just me.
